Themed Thursday – Weapons of concealment

Sometimes we can convince ourselves, and those with whom we share our lives, that we are naturally glossy-lipped, fresh-faced and line-free. Granted, this deception is a little easier to pull off with work colleagues than with the people we live with – I am a different person after a large mug of coffee and a dusting of blush, and that’s the ‘me’ the people in my office see, rather than the bleary-eyed, grouchy 7am version, and that’s how I wish it to remain.

But the truth is, life and all of its ups, downs, mysteries and adventures leads to wrinkles, shadows under our eyes and a lack of inner glow that sometimes only make-up, and a shot of positive thinking, can fix.

For a fast and effective way to mask those signs of sleeplessness, grab a concealer. These modern products are designed to stay put, block out dark circles and add a subtle glow to tired skin, and usually come in a range of shades so you can find the one that blends in best for you.

While you may already know – and love – Yves Saint Laurent’s cult product, Touche Eclat, there are lots of other affordable options out there.

Mac Prep + Prime Highlighter has a brilliant light-diffusing effect, and a light matte finish with just a hint of sparkle when applied. It covers shadows and blemishes, and you only need to use a little, making the product good value for money too.

Benefit Erase Paste is a nifty jar of easy to blend, refreshing concealer. It can be applied with a brush, or with your finger, which makes it ideal for on-the-go use and, again, a little goes a long way.

Bourjois Healthy Mix Concealer is a fairly thick liquid, so try not to use too much, and take time to properly blend once it’s on the skin. It does stay in place all day, though and has natural fruit extracts to promote radiance, hydration and improved circulation.

Finally, last but not least, No7 Instant Radiance Concealer is an effective liquid, which is applied via a brush on the end of a pen. It blends well and gives a refreshed, awake effect, while still feeling light on the skin.

Wide-awake and ready to go, and your secret self is safe for another day.
